Valley Ventures targets investment opportunities
in the southwestern United States. This area includes southern
California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, and Texas. Investments
outside of this region will be the exception. Geographic focus
allows the Fund to play a more active and value-added role in
assisting its portfolio companies.
Valley Ventures invests in proprietary life science companies in pharmaceutical, device and diagnostics.
The Fund seeks a balanced portfolio consisting
of both early and late stage investments. Later stage investments
are characterized by positive revenue, a proven product, demonstrated
market and a seasoned management team. Early investments include
initial corporate formation, technology transfer/licensing, intellectual
property definition and completion of product development.
Any business strategy is only as good as
the management team to execute it. Valley Ventures expends considerable
effort in the due diligence process is evaluating the strength
of the current management team, as well as in defining areas which
possess substantial experience in their targeted industry.
Strong proprietary positions are preferred
in investment candidates. Ideally, this is a result of existing
or likely U.S. and international patents or copyrights. Special
knowledge in a given area or trade secrets may also provide an
enduring competitive advantage to the company.
A clear and realistic exit strategy must
be present in any potential investment. IPO is the preferred exit.
Occasionally, a strategic acquisition of a portfolio company will
provide the targeted return on investment.
